WAIMEA — Leisha Li‘ili‘i and Sharla Kliebenstein each marked home runs and Kaia Parnaby gave up one run on one hit for the UH-Grey to earn a 16-4 win over the UH-Green in an intra-squad scrimmage at Waimea Canyon Park Sunday.
Loie Kesterson went in to close following Kaia Parnaby’s complete four-inning stint, Kesterson giving up three runs on three hits with three strike outs, states a Hawai‘i release.
Keiki Carlos suffered the loss for the UH-Green, giving up 16 runs, six of which were earned, with five walks allowed and whiffing four.
The Grey team jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Brynne Buchanan scored on a double steal, Kiani Wong getting second on the play. Austin Wilkerson nailed a single up the middle to score Wong and Kliebenstein, who had earlier walked to first.
Li‘ili‘i clicked up the score by four digits in the second frame when she grand slammed over the rightfield fence — the ball clonking off a parked utility vehicle near the food booth — for the 7-0 lead.
Ciana Russ, doubling to the right-centerfield gap, scored on a Kelly Majam hit which was miscued for the Green’s first run in the top of the third.
Grey answered with four more runs in the fourth frame, Wong scoring on an error and Kliebenstein mashing a three-RBI homer over to leftfield, scoring Kristina Akiona and Li‘ili‘i for the 11-1 read.
After Li‘ili‘i sacrificed to score Wong in the fifth inning, the Grey continued its scoring with four more runs starting with Lauren Parnaby singling to left followed by Stacy Rosengren getting aboard on a fielder’s choice. Buchanan got aboard on a hard hit to the pitcher to lead the bases, setting the stage for Wong’s RBI single coupling with an miscue to clear the bases. Wong scored on a Kesterson RBI single to right for the 16-1 lead.
Green came back with three runs in the seventh, starting with Jessica Iwata, her shoulder heavily taped following the outing, getting aboard on an error. Kaile Nakao doubled to the right-centerfield gap to push Jordan Burton, pinch running for Iwata, to third. Jazmine Zamora smacked a double past the third baseman on the leftfield line to score Burton and Nakao for the final arithmetic.
Coach Bob Coolen said the intra-squad scrimmage closed off the team’s fall schedule and as a treat, allowed the girls to work with the nearly 100 aspiring players, including members of the three high school teams, on skills the Hawai‘i players have been working on since the start of the fall schedule.
The visit by the Hawai‘i team was a homecoming of sorts for three of its members, Associate Head Coach Deirdre Wisneski, a former Waimea High School player, and players Jori Jasper and Iwata, both players from Kaua‘i High School.
The ‘Bows open its 2013 season with the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classing featuring visits by Washington, University of Alabama-Birmingham, Ole Miss, and St. Mary’s to the Rainbow stadium, starting Feb. 7.
