LIHU‘E — The Pearl City High School Chargers’ bowling teams soared to the top of the Billy Tees 49th Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state bowling championships, Friday at the Kaua‘i Bowl in Lihu‘e.
The Chargers’ girls team recorded a 7761 pinfall, nearly 500 pins ahead of Mililani, the runner up team, towards earning its second straight state title while the Chargers’ boys team accumulated an 8792 pinfall in its third straight state win against the Mililani Trojans’ 7914 pinfall for the runner-up spot.
Host Kaua‘i High School, the KIF champions, finished eighth in team competition with a 6332 pinfall, being joined by the Red Raider boys who finished with a 6881 pinfall for eighth place.
Ronson Dagdag of Mililani finished tops in the boys individualists, the top 15 finishers earning medals from the HHSAA for their achievements.
Chase Ueno of Waimea opened strong Friday night, rolling six straight strikes towards his eventual 1683 pinfall over two days for 10th place, the only KIF medalist in the tournament which featured representation from 23 high schools.
On the girls’ lanes, Kaua‘i’s Darcie Vea, consistently leading the KIF, pocketed 1476 pins to lead the KIF wahine just out of the medal chase in the No. 18 spot, its individualist, Angelika Questin of Kapa‘a, ending in 25th place with a 1440 pinfall.
Kacee Taniyan of Leileihua finished with 1700 pinfall to lead the girls individualists.
