KALAHEO — A three-car accident near the Hanapepe lookout caused the closure of Kaumuali‘i Highway Sunday afternoon and resulted in one person needing treatment for minor injuries.
Kaua‘i Police report that a sedan was traveling eastbound and was attempting to make a left turn into the Hanapepe lookout, when it was rear-ended by another sedan, according to a county press release. The collision forced the first car into the westbound lane, where it struck a pickup truck that was headed west.
The crash occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. Sunday, and the highway was closed for roughly an hour.
There was one person in the truck, one person in one of the sedans and two people in the second sedan. The passenger of the second sedan was transported to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment.
During the highway closure, east- and west-bound traffic was detoured via Halewili Road.
There were also two road mishaps on the same day last week, one of which hospitalized a road crew worker.
At about 10:35 a.m. Thursday, a Roberts Tour bus was traveling northbound on Koke‘e Road when it drove through a construction zone about three miles north of the Kekaha Road Junction. A 49-year-old male construction worker was pinned between the bus and a work truck, according to county spokesperson Sarah Blane.
The construction worker received serious injuries and was transported to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital, and was transported later that day to Queens Medical Center on O‘ahu for treatment. On Friday, the victim was reported to be in good condition.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which is still under investigation. Koke‘e Road remains open through the construction area.
Also, at around 1:08 p.m. Thursday, a 17-year-old male driver was involved in a rollover accident.
The teenager was the only occupant of a 1993 Toyota multipurpose vehicle that went off the roadway when he lost control of the vehicle.
The vehicle rolled onto its side on Maluhia Road about one- mile north of the Ala Kinoiki junction.
No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
The northbound lane of Maluhia Road was closed from 1:15 p.m. to about 2:30 p.m. while crews cleared debris and oil from the roadway. During the road closure, police officers conducted contra-flow on the open southbound lane.
