Runaway development is ruining the ‘aina
We have read many books about Kaua‘i, especially as it relates to the ancient Hawaiian culture and their careful planning and care for the ‘aina.
Kaua‘i is a beautiful place, not only for it’s scenery, but also for the dramatic shoreline. We came here close to five years ago, intending to stay for only six months, but we are still here. One of the things that keeps us busy is volunteering, one of our favorite things to do is keep ‘Anini Beach clean as we walk the beach daily.
Several months ago we sent the County of Kaua‘i several photos taken at the end of ‘Anini showing the pollution in the stream coming down from the golf courses above ‘Anini including cesspool runoff.
In our time here, we had noticed the water getting considerably murkier. It appears that the coral disease is being caused by the runoff from all the polluted water in the streams. The county did send a team out to check the pollution levels based on my photographs. Their findings indicated that the pollution “levels were normal.” What is normal when it comes to pollution? Can a 9-month-old baby be bathed in that water? Many times we see families in that stream with all their children .
We are sure that the residents of Hanalei are very concerned about the proposed new development by Pierre Omidyar as it will, no doubt, impact further on Kaua‘i’s coral and overall beauty.
Kaua‘i may be a victim of it’s own success and should be aware that allowing runaway development will only ruin the island’s beauty and future life of its people.

Thankful for the 22nd Amendment
Every once in a while we elect a person to the White House that is intent on amassing power for themselves. FDR was such a person. He was the first and only president who served for more than two terms. His big ego drove him to be elected four times.
He wanted to expand government powers by giving benefits to the citizens.
He started Social Security, which is a good program, but he also confiscated gold from private citizens, and he tried to completely control the judicial branch by changing from nine justices to 15. He wanted to be president for life.
Now we have another charismatic leftist, President Obama, who is also intent on expanding the government power by giving away “stuff” to the citizens. We now have a “narcissist” in chief.
We are at a tipping point when so many depend on the government. A Republic can only last until the citizens figure out they can vote themselves benefits from their government.
So, on this Thanksgiving weekend, I am thankful for our 22nd Amendment, which will term limit Obama to two terms.

Scapegoats?
Regarding the TGI letter printed Nov. 21 by Dr. Downs titled “Regarding Myles Emura” and his follow up letter, this reader admits ignorance of all details concerning this obvious battle between Mr. Emura and the County of Kaua‘i.
However, over the months this author has read numerous letters of praise for Myles — from Kaua‘i and the Mainland — 20 positive; 0 negative.
Dr. Downs’ objections appear to be aimed not at the allegations, but rather the manner in which “he (Myles) chose to level the allegations against his professional supervisors publicly, and not in the courtroom where allegations belong.”
Upon further investigation it appears that it is was not Myles who filed a complaint but rather: “a co-worker filed a complaint regarding two supervisors.”
On Sept. 27, TGI reported Myles was later called before the County Ethics Board for honest testimony, which he gave. As a result of said honest testimony, it was The Garden Island that thrust Myles onto the public stage.
It was after his honest testimony before the CEB that repercussions, “retaliations,” were initiated toward Myles; thus requiring legal council on Myles behalf.
Is the CoK creating another scapegoat similar to the present litigation concerning our mayor’s gas theft case?
Is Human Resource Manager Janine M.Z. Rapozo joining the scapegoat brigade alongside of Myles?
If Ocean Safety Bureau supervisors or the mayor and staff did pilfer county property for their own use and gain, then who is truly the guilty party or parties?

What else is the county covering up?
Why is the County of Kaua‘i trying to quash the case about the gas card? If this happened to a Unit 1 Member that person would be on “Leave without pay pending investigation.”
Why is the county trying to cover up this case?
Is the county trying hide something from the public?
This is a case that is going be settled in court, I hope.
I am retired and can‘t hold back without writing something. Who ever brought this out should be commended.
How many other things happened that the public doesn‘t know about within the county of Kaua‘i?
This is theft or stealing from the County of Kaua‘i.
