LIHU‘E — Organizers of the Relay for Life Hanapepe hosted an open house Saturday at Rob’s Good Times Grill in Lihu‘e to register teams and kickoff the 2013 event.
“This year’s theme is Big Dream. Big Hope. Big Relay. Big Hollywood,” said Nalani Brun, entertainment and activities coordinator.
Teams are encouraged to pick a big movie for their theme, along with a team song and slogan.
Organizers were also asking teams what they might be selling as a fundraiser on the night of the Relay so they could space food offerings and activities out along the route.
This year’s Relay for Life will be held April 27 to 28, 2013, at Hanapepe Stadium at 4431 Puolo Rd. in Hanapepe.
Around the country, the Relay for Life event starts at sunset and ends as sunrise in homage to the cycle of cancer, from diagnosis to survival.
According to the American Cancer Society, “Relay for Life is a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer.”
Anyone who has ever faced a cancer diagnosis is invited to join in the Survivors’ Victory Lap to open the Relay For Life evening.
Teams camp out for an evening and raise awareness and funds.
Teams are asked by the ACS to have a representative on the track at all times throughout the night, “because cancer never sleeps.”
Luminerias light the way to honor people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their continuing fight or victory or to remember people who lost the fight.
Events nationwide raise funds for the American Cancer Society, which is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.
“The weather is always nice for us there,” Brun said.
Relay for Life has been in Hanapepe for the past 15 years, but has been held in various locations on Kaua‘i since the 1980s.
Brun said a concert is being planned, along with performances from area halaus.
