LIHU‘E — The undefeated Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders hosted the 1-1 Kapa‘a High School Warriors Friday night at the Kaua‘i High School gym. The combination of Kristle Henry and Casey Anacleto combined for 40 points in Kaua‘i’s 57-39 dismantling of the Warriors.
Henry has been solid all season for the Red Raiders and wasn’t slowed down Friday as she poured in a game high 22 points with 17 of those coming in the first half. Anacleto, who has also shot the ball well, finished with 18 points, including a strong second half.
The Red Raiders got out early on the fast break and never stopped. Kapa‘a had a difficult time stopping the ball in transition, especially when Kaua‘i was able to get its outlet passes in the hands of the guards.
The fast breaks were often initiated off of solid defensive rebounding from Kaua‘i, who got the best of the undersized Warriors on the glass.
Kapa‘a was not without its moments as Kekai Gonsalves turned in another solid game from the floor with 19 points. Gonsalves had moments where she got into foul trouble and had to come off the floor for Head Coach William Aki, which hurt the Warriors as the team struggled to find offense with her on the bench.
The Red Raiders appear to have a solid hold on first place and are showing no signs of letting up. The difference in many of the games has been Kaua‘i’s ability to get out on the fast break — if Waimea or Kapa‘a hope to have a chance moving forward, they will need to look for a way to slow the Red Raiders down.
With the victory, Kaua‘i remains unbeaten and moves to 4-0 on the season and will have lengthy time off with its next game coming on Jan. 8 when the team travels to Waimea and take on the Waimea High School Menhune.
The Kapa‘a Warriors slide to 1-2 on the season and will prepare to host Waimea on Friday for a rematch of its overtime thriller on Dec. 18.
In junior varsity action, Kapa‘a held off the Red Raiders 33-31.
