LIHU‘E — The Garden Island newspaper and the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i are teaming up again this year and asking the community to help make the holidays happier for less-fortunate residents through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
From now through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. The names have been changed to protect their privacy. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true.
Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted. Checks made payable to Zonta Club of Kaua‘i Foundation can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihu‘e, HI 96766. Homeless man could use bus pass
Jesse has been homeless for years now. He was in denial about his substance abuse problem until he was arrested for shop lifting and the judge ordered him in a substance abuse program. He has been clean for one year and graduated from the program. He is still going to AA meetings and is trying to help others stop drinking. He really could us a bus pass to continue his meeting and some warm clothes for the winter months. Case # GZ/H.19
Help man get car street-legal
Jimmy has been homeless for five years now, and is unable to get into subsidized housing because of his past criminal history. He lives off of his disability benefits in his car which is not allowed to move, because its registration and safety inspection were expired when it was given to him. He really could use a street-legal car he can drive and go to his doctor appointments. He has enough funds to keep a car legal, but is unable to pay the overdue registration fees on top of the yearly registration fee. Case # GZ/H.20
Homeless family needs your kokua
Joey, Julie and their daughter, Amy, became homeless when Joey had a heart attack this year. He is fine now that he has a pacemaker. But he is on medication that makes him tired all the time. The family lives off Joey’s disability check but lives paycheck to paycheck and leaves nothing extra. They didn’t have enough money to buy dinner off the dollar menu at McDonalds. They really could use some extra food for the holidays and diapers and wipes for 1-year-old Amy. Case # GZ/H.21
Lend hand to homeless veteran
Tom is a veteran and has been homeless since he arrived on Kaua‘i two years ago. He was given disability for a disease he has but it has not been confirmed that he attained it in the service. He will be receiving his HUD VASH voucher in the future. He is unable to stay in the KEO shelter because he has used up his 42 days this year. He could use some holiday food as well as a backpack. Warm clothes wanted for winter
Kaleo has suffered from a learning disability all his life. It was not diagnosed until he broke his back and was to get retrained for another job. He can’t get retrained until he goes back to school and finishes his basic GED, which he is doing now. He is so determined to get back to work, what ever it may be. He lives on his limited disability funds and could really use some warm clothes and food for the holiday months. Case # GZ/H.23
Hot meals, clothes, container wanted
Kea suffers from a mental illness, which caused him to lose his housing. He had someone take advantage of him by staying in his unit. Kea had no idea he was in the wrong, while the other person was well aware that he was not supposed to stay with Kea. Kea is now no longer able to get subsidized housing and will have to find a room to rent on his disability income. He really could use some hot meals, new clothes and a container to keep them in. Homeless veteran looking for tools
Tim has been homeless most of his adult life after he returned from the Gulf War; nothing seemed to be the same. He finally went in this year to seek out his veteran benefits. He will be receiving a HUD VASH voucher any day now. He has always done farming and could really use some tools; they don’t need to be new, just still in workable condition. Case # GZ/H.25
Sleeping bag, long pants needed
Sam has been homeless and unemployed for nearly two years now because of the economy. He does get a few small jobs here and there, but not enough to pay rent. Sam really could use a new sleeping bag, a package of socks, a nice warm flannel shirt, and some long pants for the winter months to come. Case # GZ/H.26

Sally has been homeless for about one month this time with her four children. She really could use a family-sized tent and tarp for the winter months to come. She also could use some holiday food and gifts for her children. All four of the children love swimming and playing in the ocean. Case # GZ/H.27
