KAPA‘A — Mikala Jordan bucketed 18 points and Makana Kuali‘i added 11 points to lead the Kohala Cowboys to a 63-32 win over the Waimea Menehune Saturday at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
The win clinched the title at the Kapa‘a Holiday basketball tournament, the Cowboys finishing with an undefeated 3-0 record.
Lance Miyashiro set the pace for the host Warriors, tucking away 16 points. Marlon Cudiamat added 10 points to lead Kapa‘a to a 56-46 edge over the visiting Hawai‘i Baptist Academy Eagles of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
The Warriors win was a rebound from its 44-66 loss to the Cowboys Friday night, the second night of the three-night tournament.
The Saturday rebound gave the host Kapa‘a team second place in the tournament, finishing with a 2-1 record and HBA filling in third place with a 1-2 record.
Waimea rounded out the field with an 0-3 showing, despite strong play led by Duke Yadao, banking 13 points against the Cowboys Saturday.
On the opening night, Waimea held a one-point deficit at the half and held its own against Kapa‘a through most of the third period before the Warriors opened up a triple threat surge late in the game.
Friday night, Yadao teamed with guard Peterson Lahip to combine for 25 points, but came up two points short, 39-41 against HBA.
Top guns for the Eagles in its 56-46 loss against host Kapa‘a on Saturday included B.J. Hosaka firing off a game-high 17 points followed by Danton Tominaga adding 13 points.
That same duo led the Eagles on opening night, Hosaka netting 17 points and Tominaga adding five points in its 46-27 loss to the Cowboys.
Tominaga took the lead Friday, coming up with 14 points against Waimea while Hosaka finished with 11 points and Chris Caballes added 10 points.
Miyashiro, getting both the inside and outside range, got help from Grant Mitchell with eight points Thursday night.
During its Friday night loss, Miyashiro got help from Makana Aki who pocketed 11 points against Kohala.
Jordan, the Cowboys’ scoring leader in its title game Saturday, came up with 10 points against Kapa‘a Friday night. He was joined by Justin Agbayani with 10 digits. Kala‘i Kapeliela, the Cowboys’ outside guard, finished with 14 points to lead Kohala in its Friday night win over Kapa‘a, getting help from Kealan Figueroa with 13 points.
The Kapa‘a Holiday basketball tournament wraps up the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation preseason just ahead of its boys basketball season which starts Wednesday when Waimea visits Kaua‘i High School.
The Junior Varsity match tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity matchup starting approximately 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game.
Kapa‘a will host Kaua‘i on Saturday with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m.
