LIHU‘E — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Forestry and Wildlife announced an opportunity for individuals to assist the division in animal control of feral goats in Hunting Unit F on Kaua‘i, pursuant to Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules Regulating Game Mammal Hunting,” Section 13-123-9.
Animal control will be limited to archery and muzzleloader methods only, due to safety concerns, states a DLNR press release.
Interested individuals will need to show a valid hunting license and will be required to sign an animal control permit. Animal control permits will be available at the DOFAW office at 3060 ‘Eiwa St., Rm. 306, Lihu‘e.
Muzzleloader-only period
The muzzleloader only period opened Saturday, and will run through Feb. 28 on weekends and state holidays. The limit will be two feral goats (either sex) per hunter per day. Animals may be de-boned in the field. A blaze-orange vest, shirt or jacket is also required in the field. The ongoing pig hunting season will continue as scheduled.
Archery-only period
The archery only period will run from March 1 through June 30 on weekends and state holidays. The limit will be two feral goats (either sex) per hunter per day. Animals may be de-boned in the field. Blaze orange will not be required for the archery only season. The ongoing pig hunting season will continue as scheduled.
Limits are set to maximize public opportunities to participate in this control action. There is no limit on the number of times a person can participate; however, hunters must sign in and sign out at a hunter checking station.
Access to Hunting Unit F is along Waimea Canyon and Koke‘e roads using the Waimea Heights, Mango Tree, and Koke‘e Hunter Checking Stations. Hunters may also access Unit F via Menehune Road to the Waimea Canyon HCS.
