LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School wrapped up a 3-0 win over Island School Wednesday to break up the four-way tie, which existed following Saturday’s matches.
Kapa‘a High School, with its 4-1 win over Waimea on Tuesday at Hanapepe Stadium, threw the pebble into the deadlock.
Kaua‘i, playing before a stalwart corps of fans braving the biting winds buffeting Vidinha Stadium, added an insurance goal to its 2-0 halftime lead against a tenacious Island School defense.
Seven minutes into play of what looked like another defensive slugfest, Kaua‘i opened the scorebooks on a penalty kick off Abel Aguilar’s foot.
Kaua‘i assistant coach Ace Reuarin broke the defensive slugfest with personnel changes on the field, moving defender Grant Basquez to the front mid position, a move which eventually affected the outcome of the game.
With the clock ticking down the minutes to the half, Basquez elicited several gasps from the audience with his booming shots.
Basquez capitalized on a throw-in infraction to boom the ball into the net from more than 30 yards out at the 31st minute after taking a cross from the throw-in.
Reuarin moved Basquez back to defense in the final minutes when Island School took the offensive following an Aguilar goal, which came off a Conor Turley corner kick and landing in traffic, Reggie McFadden deflecting the ball to Aguilar who nailed the shot in traffic.
The ball dribbled near the goalmouth and Tyler Nagao, wide open in the corner, tapped in the ball as insurance on the play.
With the win, Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a varsity boys are now tied for the lead in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation. Island School and Waimea are tied in the runner-up spot, setting up the scenario for Saturday.
Kapa‘a hosts Island School varsity boys in a 10 a.m. match at Vidinha Stadium followed by the Junior Varsity girls in an exhibition match starting at noon.
Waimea hosts Kaua‘i High School with four games on tap at Hanapepe Stadium, starting with the JV boys at 10 a.m. followed by the JV girls at 11:30 a.m. The varsity boys take the field starting at 1:30 p.m. followed by the varsity girls starting at 3:30 p.m.
Chloe Fredericksen scored a hat trick, or three goals netted, to lead the Kapa‘a High School varsity girls to a 3-0 win over Waimea in the second match played Wednesday. The game was played at Hanapepe Stadium.
