WAILUA — The weekend’s heavy rains caused no major headaches across the Garden Isle, although it was responsible for a power outage in Kapahi and may have helped cause a traffic accident in Wailua Sunday.
Rainfall totals across the island ranged from a half an inch in Wainiha to almost four inches in Po‘ipu, according to the National Weather Service’s rain gauges. Rainfall totals were from 5 p.m. Saturday until 5 p.m. Sunday.
Police Dispatch reported a possible downed power line on Kahuna Road in the Kapahi area around 3:45 p.m. Sunday. An officer responded that it appeared power was out in the immediate area.
Jim Kelly, communications manager for Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative, said that a tree branch fell on a power line. It was not yet known just how many people were affected, but it was a localized incident, and power was restored by 4:25 p.m.
A car crash in Wailua near the Wailua Golf Course also snarled traffic at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
County spokesperson Mary Daubert could not provide information on the accident, which witnesses said involved a truck and car. Traffic was moving, albeit slowly, through the area.
Despite the front line moving south towards the rest of the state last night, a flash flood watch is in effect until this afternoon.
“There are still residual showers we’re concerned about,” said Jeff Powell, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service.
Chilly north winds are forecast for today, turning more toward the normal northeast direction tomorrow, Powell added. As the winds change, a normal tradewind weather pattern and drier conditions are expected for the rest of the week.
A high surf warning for north-facing shores is also in effect until 6 p.m. today.
