LĪHU’E – In a press release this morning, The County of Kaua’i is currently experiencing intermittent phone outages due to a technical issue with the service provider, Hawaiian Telcom. The issue appears to also be affecting the Kaua’i Police Department Police Dispatch line at 241-1711.
The 911 emergency line has not been affected, but the public is asked to limit 911 calls to emergencies only.
The exact cause of the outage is not yet known, but the issue appears to be affecting phone lines statewide. County officials are working with Hawaiian Telcom to restore phone service as soon as possible.
StarAdvertiser is reporting that a fiber-optic cable in Oahu has been cut and may be causing ‘significant’ impact on Oahu and other islands. The Garden Island newspaper phone service is down and may appear to be related.
Updates will be given as information becomes available.
“It is critical that calls to 911 be limited to emergencies only and we truly appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this time,” stated Assistant Chief of the Patrol Services Bureau Ale Quibilan. “Our staff is working through a situation beyond our control and we are doing our very best to maintain a high level of service to the public as we work to resolve the issue.”
