With the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation paddling championships looming this weekend, the Kapa‘a High School paddling teams added to its cache of winnings Saturday at the Wailua River regatta.
The Kapa‘a paddling teams have dominated the Varsity Boys, Junior Varsity Mixed and Varsity Mixed divisions since the start of the regattas.
This week, they added to its cache by taking the JV Girls division, sweeping the JV races, and coming up with two of the three varsity races.
In the JV Girls race, the Warriors opened the rainy day by getting ahead by about a second, crossing the line on a 5:02.50 paddle on the half-mile course. Kaua‘i’s A team followed on a 5:03.60 run with Waimea nailing the third berth at 5:08.98.
The Warrior win in that race broke the string of victories celebrated by Kaua‘i High School in previous regattas.
Overall, Kaua‘i continues to lead the standings with 22 points followed by Kapa‘a with 18 points and Waimea with six points.
In the JV boys’ race, Kapa‘a’s A team topped the field on a 4:22.15 run followed by the Kaua‘i A team (4:39.17).
The win gives Kapa‘a JV Boys a solid 24 points followed by Kaua‘i at 16 points.
The JV Warriors also dominate the JV Mixed field, Kapa‘a setting the pace at 4:40.21 followed by Kaua‘i A crossing at 4:52.74. In the overall field, Kapa‘a’s B team marked a 4:44.35 run in the second heat.
The Warrior JV Mixed holds 24 points in the standings with Kaua‘i at 16 points.
Kaua‘i High School varsity girls are not undefeated, but lead the standings with 28 points following its first finish Saturday at 4:59.85.
Kawaikini followed at 4:56.36 with Kapa‘a taking third place at 4:59.85.
Kawaikini is in second place in points standings with 20 points followed by Kapa‘a (17 points) and Waimea (2 points).
Kapa‘a dominated the Varsity Boys field on a 4:13.56 run over the half-mile course followed by Kaua‘i (4:18.92) and Waimea (4:31.06).
With the win Kapa‘a improves to 30 points in the division followed by Waimea (19 points) and Kaua‘i (16 points).
Less than a second separated first and second place in the Varsity Mixed race, Kapa‘a being able to hold off Kaua‘i on the top end with a 4:33.77 paddle over the Red Raiders’ 4:34.60 showing. Waimea filled in the third berth at 4:40.76.
Overall standings give Kapa‘a 30 points followed by Kaua‘i at 19 points and Waimea at 16 points.
The KIF paddling championships, which will be held Saturday on the Wailua River starting at 9 a.m., will determine not only the holder of division titles, but who advances to the state competition.
