KALAHEO — There were six games on tap with no one sweeping the action Saturday during the county’s youth basketball league games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
The girls division, consisting of players in the third, fourth and fifth grades, made its debut. Team Lihu‘e and Kaulupono posted the initial wins in the division.
Kaulupono, under coaches Bobby Kamakele and Pedro Saligumba, got eight points from T.J. Ramos, the younger sister of Waimea High School guard Jullynn Ramos; and four points apiece from Alysha Palacio, younger sister of Waimea High School player Nicole Palacio; Kaye Serapio, Braelyn Cayaban and D’Anndra Helgen in its 32-9 win over Team Central, who got four points from Jasmyn Ballesteros.
Marissa Layosa fired off a whopping 22 points to lead Team Lihu‘e girls to a 36-4 win over Westside. Ashlyn Agena and Chyna Fernandez fired pairs for the Westside.
Ellsworth Kaeiohi, Xaerys Dela Cruz and Toshi Cox scored six points apiece to lead Team Lihu‘e boys, Division 1 (third and fourth grade), to a 20-2 win over Kapa‘a. Kelson DeSilva got off the sole Kapa‘a bucket.
In the final Team Lihu‘e outing, a Division 2 (fifth and sixth grade), match, Papalina was led by Trey Taba’s three three-pointers and 15 points total in a 35-17 win. David Pascua (six points) and Chace Balaris (five points) led Team Lihu‘e. Nick Herbig also scored eight for Papalina.
Hanakila, under the coaching of Dave Simon, split its two games, the first, coming up seven points short, 27-20 against the Kamikaze in a Boys Division 2 match.
Hero Raza topped the second match with a game-high 12 points to lead Hanakila, who fielded just six players. Kyson Ikehara and Takeshi Komar fired off nine and eight points, respectively, for the Kamikaze in the win.
Kala Rall and Kawai Apana notched 12 and 10 points, respectively, for game-high scoring to lead Hanakila to a 56-14 showing over the Westside in its Boys Division 1 outing.
Chasen Hawela and Brandon Murata each lent eight points to the Hanakila win. Barak Avigueterto finished with eight points to top the Westside effort.
With today being the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the county youth basketball league next takes the floor Tuesday with a pair of Boys Division 1 matches at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Westside takes on the Supersonics starting at 6 p.m. followed by Hanakila tangling with Papalina starting at 7 p.m.
