KALAHEO — Luke Hunadi finished with 16 points, including two three-balls, to lead Papalina to a 20-14 edge over Kapa‘a Tuesday during the county’s Division 1 youth basketball league at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Chanson Inanod-Hawelu bucketed an evening-high 16 points to lead the Division 1, boys in the third and fourth grade, to a 42-12 roll over Team Lihu‘e in the nightcap.
Hunadi got the ball rolling for Papalina, launching his first bomb from outside the three-point arc in the opening frame for the 4-2 bulge.
But Kapa‘a came back with a 4-0 second frame to take a 6-4 lead only to have Papalina answer with a 5-0 third frame, including Hunadi’s second trey, for the 9-6 bulge at the half.
Jai Ganun added four points to the Papalina victory.
Anthony Durocher topped the Kapa‘a scoring with six points followed by Tyler Hawthorne adding four, Kelson DeSilva and Alakai Gonsalves each adding a pair in the effort.
Following Inanod-Hawelu’s lead, Hanakila, a team comprised primarily of boys from the Hanalei and Kilauea area, saw Brandon Murata end with 10 points followed by Kala Rall and Kawai Apana with six points apiece.
Micah Agtunong topped Team Lihu‘e scoring with six points followed by Xaerys Dela Cruz with four points.
The Division 1 boys will be joined by the Division 2 boys and the girls division Saturday when six games unfold at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting at 9 a.m.
Division 2, or boys in the fifth and sixth grade, take the floor at 9 a.m. when Team Central meets Team Lihu‘e at 9 a.m. followed by the Kamikaze taking on Hanakila starting at 10 a.m.
The girls division will have Westside meeting Team Central in an 11 a.m. match followed by Kaulupono taking on Team Lihu‘e in a 1 p.m. tipoff.
Division 1 boys will have Westside hosting Kapa‘a in a noon match with the Supersonics taking on Papalina in a 2 p.m. matchup.
