PUHI — The afternoon warmed for Island School as the Voyagers notched its first goal of the season Wednesday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer games against Kaua‘i High School at the Puhi campus.
“I wondered why everybody was celebrating so much,” said Jane Garma, whose son Scrappy plays for Kaua‘i High School. “I didn’t realize this was their first goal of the season.”
But the glory was short-lived for the Voyagers who held a 1-0 edge following its goal by Cole Moore.
Kaua‘i answered when Grant Basquez found the net on a penalty kick and iced the 2-1 win with a Lucas Gushikuma goal, all the action taking place in the first half.
The intense slugfest continued, Basquez drawing a yellow card for unsporting play and Island School’s coach, Sean Magoun, drawing a yellow for dissent.
The Kaua‘i win sets the stage for Saturday when the Red Raiders host Waimea at Vidinha Stadium while Island School hosts Kapa‘a boys at the Puhi fields starting at 10 a.m.
Official results from the Waimea game played at Vidinha Stadium against Kapa‘a were not available at press time.
Waimea’s Lois Keamoai, working the admission table at the Waimea High School KIF boys basketball game, said she got word that Kapa‘a girls had shut out Waimea, 4-0, and with 10 minutes remaining in play, Kapa‘a boys held a 1-0 edge over Waimea.
