KILAUEA — Eastside Division 2 (fifth and sixth grade) boys team coached by Josh Offley roared to a 32-10 win over the Kamikaze, while the Hanakila Division 2 boys team coached by Dave Simon held on for two periods before being overcome by Team Lihu‘e Monday at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center.
Playing in the county’s youth basketball league, Kaulu Rittmeister and Aiden Offley each pocketed eight points to lead the Eastside Heat to its victory.
Eli Unotoa and Mikey Cruz added six points each, with Logan Noice and Nakela Snyder finishing with pairs.
Travis Duran, top scorer for the Kamikaze, fired off a three-point bomb in the second period en route to his five total points. Kampbell Hanano and Takeshi Komar each added four points.
The Hanakila Division 2 started off strong, pocketing four points while holding Team Lihu‘e to just a pair following the opening stanza.
Hanakila, comprised mainly of players from the Hanalei and Kilauea area, stayed close, but by the end of the second frame, team Lihu‘e had a 9-8 lead.
Team Lihu‘e, being led by a game-high (and evening-high) 18 points from David Pascua, pushed the lead to 15-9 at the half en route to its 36-16 final, including holding Hanakila to just a pair in the fourth stanza and scoreless in the fifth frame.
Tanner Bentley added five points to the Team Lihu‘e win along with Kai Villanueva contributing four points. Aizen Yamashita lit the twine in the fourth frame with a three-ball accounting for half of its six-point performance in the period.
Hero Raza, himself launching a trey in the final period, finished with eight points to lead the Hanakila effort followed by Jesse Zemel adding six points.
The Division 2 boys next take the floor Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with two games scheduled.
Eastside Heat will open against Team Central in the 6 p.m. tip-off followed by Hanakila coming over to meet the Hanapepe Bomb Squad starting at 7 p.m.
Six games — two from Division 1 (third and fourth grade) boys, two from Division 2 boys, and a pair from the girls — make up the Saturday schedule at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center starting from 9 a.m., with the last contest tipping off at 2 p.m.
