LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Ocean Safety officials are alerting the public about a high surf warning in effect through Tuesday morning for all north and west facing shores on Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.
High surf is expected to rise rapidly this morning and peak this afternoon. Large breaking surf, significant shore break, and dangerous currents make entering the water very dangerous.
While the high surf warning is in effect, ocean officials urge beachgoers to stay completely out of the water on the north shore and west facing beaches. The National Weather Service warns that anyone entering the water in these areas is risking significant injury or death.
A tragedy occurred recently on Kaua‘i when two men drowned in waters off South Kalihiwai Point while visiting a rocky cliff along the shoreline. Brian Baker died after being swept into the choppy water by a rogue wave. His friend, Adam Griffiths, reportedly died while attempting to save Baker.
Rescuers also warn residents and visitors that wet weather can cause river crossings along Kaua‘i’s hiking trails to rise rapidly and unexpectedly.
“If you plan to do an outdoor activity this week, please be sure that someone knows where you’re going and when you plan to return,” states Kaua‘i Fire Chief Robert Westerman. “And learn the potential areas of caution before you go out by asking questions of people that know the location.”
