KAPA‘A — The Kapa‘a High School boys basketball romped to a sweep Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
The Warrior junior varsity team got the ball rolling, posting an 83-33 win over the visiting Waimea Menehune as Michael Booth topped the charts with 11 points, seven coming in the second period when the JV Warriors posted a 26-7 offensive showing for a 46-14 halftime lead.
The varsity squad, securing the first round title in a playoff over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders, continued to roar, pulling ahead in the second period to post a 64-37 win over the Menehune, Lance Miyashiro setting the pace with 16 points balanced through two halves.
With the scoreboard refusing to budge in the first two minutes of play, Waimea guard Peterson Lahip got the Menehune on the board first, firing off a bomb from outside the three-point arc.
The scoreboard continued to stick for the Warriors before Miyashiro unclogged the jam for the 3-2 deficit. Lahip bucketed a pair and Miyashiro answered for the 4-5 Kapa‘a deficit.
Miyashiro could only sink the front end of a charity pair to tie the match 5-5 before Matt Cummings pulled the Warriors out as the clock ticked down in the first stanza.
Duke Yadao answered for Waimea with a pair of buckets, but a flurry of shots from James Paik, Bester Dikilato and center Morean Clemente pulled Kapa‘a to a 16-9 bulge at the end of the quarter.
Kapa‘a never looked back, faltering in the third period, but never relinquishing its lead. The Menehune got another five points from Lahip as Waimea outshot Kapa‘a 9-5, the only stanza Waimea outgunned the quick Warriors.
Lahip, who led the Menehune scoring with 10 points, including a pair of treys, fouled out with about six minutes showing in the game, the second Menehune to be buzzed out following Nohili Kahepu‘u, bucketing four points, left the court with seconds left in the third quarter.
Duke Yadao, the Menehune low post, was held scoreless in the third frame but finished with nine points, six coming in the first half.
Briggs Agu fired off his seven points, including a three-ball, all in the final period with Amor Martinez adding a third quarter pair and Menehune center Robert Oliver getting a three-ball in the second stanza, his only score.
Despite being hobbled by an ailing back, which sent him to the trainer several times in the contest, Miyashiro finished with 16 points followed by Makana Aki adding 11 points, including a three-ball in the second frame. James Stevens, exploding for seven points in the second frame, finished with 10 points.
James Paik, taking control of the fourth quarter five, finished with eight points to round out the Warrior scoring leaders.
Cummings and Brison Nacapuy each finished with five points, Nacapuy dropping four marks in the final stanza. Kana‘i Kahoonei-Thronas, Dikilato and Clemente each finished with a pair.
Following Booth’s lead in the JV matchup, Kapa‘a saw Dave Alguialdo and Josh Blaine add 10 points each, Junnard Mata and Keali‘i Colipano each marking eight points and starter Masese Fifita finishing with seven points along with Paul Oyama. The final starter, Willo Batol, ended with five points.
