Po‘ipu restrooms cause stink
Well, it’s about time someone has made mention of the restroom situation at Po‘ipu Beach Park. It’s been almost 6 months since I’ve seen the public restroom closed and the Porta Potties brought in. At first it was tolerable thinking its temporary once this beach was named “America’s Best Beach” ranking among the 10 best beaches by The Travel Channel.
Like myself and many others residents and visitors, we’ve been wondering what is going on with the renovation, and we all agree, there’s NOTHING going on. I think the Parks and Recreations and the County of Kaua‘i should have had all the I’s dotted, the T’s crossed on this renovation project before shutting the public restrooms down for an undetermined amount or time. Someone needs to step up and take charge of expediting this matter before it gets to be a real health hazard issue.
If the Parks and Recreation came across the “technical issues with the design element of the repair which caused a delay in the bid posting” why couldn’t they have held off closing the restrooms until a bid/contract was awarded?
It’s a shame that a beach voted No. 1, profiting its hotels and restaurants to enjoy much income, does not warrant repair in a timely manner.

Don’t pet the service dog, he’s on duty
Regarding the Jan. 11 letter “Don’t pet a dog without permission”: Thank you, Kimo, for writing this letter. My service dog wears a clearly marked vest saying “Don’t pet me; I’m working,” yet we encounter people all the time who disregard this.
My hearing dog alerts to sounds, and petters and gropers definitely interfere with her work. I will add, in defense of the good people on Kaua‘i, that as they get more accustomed to service dogs, their (the humans) behavior is improving!

Voice your problems regarding wood-burning Thursday
According to Jay Furfaro’s legislative assistant, “On Behalf of Chair Jay Furfaro, this is to inform you that the Kaua‘i County Council will receive a briefing from the County Attorney at the Thursday, January 17, 2013 County Council Meeting on the County’s authority to implement legislation relating to air pollution control as it relates to fireplaces and other wood-burning appliances and an overview of the State Clean Air Branch rules relating to air pollution control. This briefing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. or soon thereafter.”
I believe that anyone that is bothered by, sickened by, or who can’t breathe due to this problem on our Island to attend and state their problems with wood-burning fireplaces that affect you as it has affected us in our neighborhood for years.
The meeting takes place in Lihu‘e at the County Council building (old courthouse).

Pay attention to the road, not who’s on the phone
Geez. Just read Michael Mann’s reply to Chief Perry on cell phone violations and had to shake MY head. He’s criticizing the statistics given by KPD? Why? As the old saying goes, the police can’t be everywhere. I don’t know what worries me more, cell phone violators or rubba neckas trying to see who’s on their phones.
In a downpour no less. Mr. Mann, if you’re concentrating on the on-coming traffic how in the world are you watching the cars in front of you? I hope your not behind ME. Sarcasm intended.
