LIHU‘E — Hundreds filed in to Kilohana to get a taste of mayhem Saturday night.
Ainofea presented its annual Mayhem at the Mansion event, which featured 11 fights, including 10 mixed martial arts bouts and one kickboxing match. Some fighters left the mansion bruised, battered and bloodied, while others claimed victory as warriors of the cage.
Fighters from Kaua‘i, Maui and O‘ahu were all on the card. Vance Pascua, the event organizer, and UFC’s Chris Leban thanked those at the grassroots level for providing venues and support for young fighters who are using the opportunity to hone their skills.
180-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: Kawika Grace (KKD MMA Maui) vs. Umialiloa O Na Kaupu (Freelance Kaua‘i)
Result: Grace winner by TKO
Notes: Grace was the winner by TKO in the first round. He controlled the fight for the duration and showed a strong ability to strike while standing up.
210-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: Ikaika Poaipuni (KKD MMA Maui) vs. CJ Floors (HFA O‘ahu)
Result: Floors winner by decision
Notes: Fight went all three rounds to give Floors the decision. Most of the fight was spent on the ground, where Floors showed nice skills and strength to run away with the fight.
175-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: Chris Randolph (Rubble Boys) vs. Shota (HMC)
Result: Shota winner by referee stoppage
Notes: Randolph was the definite winner in round 1, being more active. Round 2 saw both fighters effective on the ground, but at the end of the round Randolph suffered a cut. The referee stopped the fight, giving the match to Shota.
145-pound amateur kickboxing
Matchup: Brandon Fraser (808 FF) vs. Kaylan Gorospe (Leben FS O‘ahu)
Result: Gorospe winner by TKO
Notes: Match was dominated by Gorospe, who got a knockdown in the first round before earning a TKO early in the second.
135-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: JR Casem (Maui Martial Arts) vs. Bobby Nagao (KTI Jiu Jitsu)
Result: Nagao winner by TKO
Notes: Match didn’t go past the first round with Nagao earning the victory with some vicious ground and pound.
185-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: Micah Ige (Team Xtreme) vs. Cameron Silva (HMC)
Result: Silva winner by tapout
Notes: Silva earned the submission in round 1 via a triangle choke.
145-pound amateur MMA
Matchup: Guy Fujita (KKD MMA Maui) vs. Nalu Hawelu (New Breed)
Result: Hawelu winner by TKO
Notes: Hawelu got the first take-down of the match in round 1 and that was all he needed, finishing Fujita off with some ground and pound.
135-pound amateur MMA for belt
Matchup: Bronson Mohika (808 FF O‘ahu) vs. JR Gomez (HFA)
Result: Mohika winner by decision
Notes: Mohika came out with fierce inside leg kicks and dominated round 1, while Gomez would return the favor in round 2. The third and final round, Mohika was able to do enough to earn his decision and the belt.
145-pound amateur MMA for belt
Matchup: Zach Zane (KKD MMA Maui) vs. Tyson Hawelu (Newbreed)
Result: Hawelu winner by tapout
Notes: Match didn’t go past the first round with Hawelu getting Zane to tapout via rear naked choke to win the belt.
170-pound professional MMA for belt
Matchup: Maki Pitolo (WOMMA) vs. Jason Camarillo (Action MMA)
Result: Pitolo winner by decision
Notes: In what was the toughest decision of the night, Pitolo was able to come away with the win. Camarillo seemed to have easily won the first 1 1/2 rounds but was noticeably tired. Pitolo took advantage, getting a take-down early in round three and was able to do enough to win the fight.
145-pound professional MMA
Matchup: Tyler Kahihikolo (Wailuku Boxing) vs. Eben Kaneshiro (Newbreed)
Result: Kahihikolo winner by TKO
Notes: They saved the bloodiest match for last. Kahihikolo showed an amazing striking ability that Kaneshiro could not match, but Kaneshiro was effective getting Kahihikolo to the ground. Kaneshiro would suffer a nasty cut on the top of his head in round 2, which nearly stopped the fight. When round three came around, Kahihikolo began to dominate with ground and pound, which caused the referee to step in, leaving Kaneshiro a bloody mess.
