PUHI — Kaua‘i’s Soul Fire Productions is upping its game in a big way with its multi-media production SEKAI — a not-to-be-missed, mesmerizing journey for the eyes and soul.
Soul Fire co-owner Kaia Shine said the idea for SEKAI — meaning “one world” in Japanese — came to her in her sleep two years ago and has been a work in progress ever since.
“I had a dream of this geisha character with the fire umbrella,” Shine said. “It was very strong and very vivid.”
Not long after her first dream, Shine said she had a second one, this time with a strong message to create a show about hope, change and the journey to create a new world. With the help of Thalyn Nikolau — who Shine described as “a theatrical genius” — SEKAI was born.
The production premiers for two shows only Feb. 17 and 18 at Kilohana Plantation in Puhi.
“(SEKAI) follows the story of a young girl, the Chosen One, who has a mystic vision to travel to a far away land to plant a sacred seed, thus enabling a new consciousness to be born,” states an event release. “Her voyage takes us through mystical lands and unknown worlds as she is shown the way by elemental guides that support her along her quest.”
Through her journey, the young girl discovers her true purpose in life.
Skylar Mallas, co-owner of Soul Fire, said the storyline offers a beautiful message about shifting the human consciousness coming into 2013.
“It’s the dying of an old age, an old paradigm,” she said. “Each person has this ‘seed’ inside of them.”
Unlike Soul Fire’s previous productions — which have focused solely around fire dancing — SEKAI offers a “myriad of beautiful artistry in all forms,” according to Mallas.
Set in a Pacific-Asian fantasy world, SEKAI guarantees its audience a sensual feast, along with mythic storytelling and elaborate costuming.
“The costumes are phenomenal,” Mallas said.
The production includes live Taiko drumming, fire dance, an LED black light performance, aerial silks, acrobatics, belly and modern dancing, all accompanied by a dynamic and engaging soundtrack, according to the release. The production is staged with unique set designs and visual projections, which bring the set to life.
“This is definitely a way richer experience,” Shine said. “Expect to be moved and mesmerized.”
SEKAI will showcase 28 high-caliber performers from around the island, who Mallas and Shine said have come together because they believe in both the vision and story.
“People are going to be touched by it,” Mallas said of the performance. “You’re going to feel it. You’re going to feel the energy.”
“The hope is that people will leave with an energy that will help shift them in their hearts,” Shine added. “I’m so excited for this and beyond.”
SEKAI will debut Feb. 17 and 18 at Kilohana Plantation’s new 20,000 square-foot facility, located at 3-2087 Kaumuali‘i Highway in Puhi.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and performances start at 8 p.m.
Local grinds by chefs Morgan Bowen and AJ Irons, as well as beer and wine, will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $54 in advance and $65 at the door. Children 13 and under get in for $25.
VIP tickets are available for $150 and include premier seating, pupus and wine.
