LIHU‘E — Without discussion, the Kaua‘i County Council passed in first reading a bill which corrects an oversight that has erased from the Kaua‘i County Code a late-night prohibition on alcoholic beverages at county parks.
An alcohol ban was originally put as an 18-month trial period beginning June 2001, and it wasn’t until September 2009 that the ban was made permanent.
But in May 2010 the council passed a law to allows dogs into the county multi-use path, and the prohibition was somehow erased from the code, likely as an oversight.
Last month, the council shelved an attempt to address the oversight, mainly because of possible legal issues of allowing those with camping permits to be exempted from the law.
The new proposed ordinance, Bill 2463, reinstates the prohibition, making it illegal for anyone to possess or consume any “intoxicating liquor” at all parks and recreation facilities between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The bill now goes through scrutiny at the council’s Parks and Recreation Committee Feb. 20.
