Editor’s note: Old-timers might still remember the introduction from The Shadow radio program: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Jerome Freitas, a retired state Department of Transportation worker who is now better known as Da Shadow, since 2004 has been meeting with government representatives about problems he has discovered or that have been reported to him, and reporting the county’s responses.

Da Shadow: (Nov. 1) For the current construction, where will the path end up the hill in Kapahi?
County: (Nov. 16) The multi-use path will begin at Gore Park up at Hundley Heights.

Da Shadow: (Nov. 1) How much is collected monthly in county sewer charges?
County: (Nov. 16) The average monthly revenue received from customers is $671,503.

Da Shadow: (Nov. 1) There is an old plantation railway remnant that I have heard will be part of the multi-use path. Is this correct? Who owns the railway? Is it an historic structure?
County: (Nov. 16) The Hanama‘ulu Railroad Bridge is being considered for use as part of the multi-use path. While the bridge has not been registered as a historic structure, it qualifies as such. The bridge spans over the road and connects at two different properties so it’s difficult to say who “owns” the bridge.

Da Shadow: (Nov. 1) How much money for operating costs comes from the federal government, from the county general fund and from bus fares? Are there other sources of revenue also?
County: (Nov. 16) FY 2013 operating funds: Federal = $595,843, county = $5,301,835, Bus Service Revenue = $850,000 (estimate).
