LIHU‘E — The fourth episode of “Kaua‘i Shining Stars in Education” is out now and features stories about science, wrestling and spelling.
The 30-minute video, produced by Sean Doi, a Department of Education Complex Area Resource teacher, airs on Ho‘ike Community Television Channel 54 on Sundays at 8 p.m., Mondays at 5 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
The February episode kicks off at the Waimea Canyon Middle School Science Fair, which focused on the theme of “making the world a better place.”
“This is probably the second year that we actually adventured away from Waimea Canyon School proper and actually got out into the public,” Susan Togioka, the school’s science teacher, says in the episode. “The main reason and the main focus was to honor our students work by giving them an environment that they can actually display their events and people can actually see it. At school, it was kind of a confined audience. … Out here in the community it benefits the whole community.”
The episode features several students speaking about their science fair projects.
Sixth-grader Samantha Bostick focused her project on generating electricity using wave and tidal power.
Micah Pascua, also a sixth-grader, studied the efficiency of different light bulbs.
Eighth-grader Jacky Lin studied the effectiveness of hydropower.
Eosin Chelius, a seventh-grader, tested the efficiency of different kinds of solar panels.
Braden Kobayashi, a seventh-grader, focused on the difference between hydroponics and aquaponics.
And, finally, Aubrey Hedges, an eighth-grader, tested the efficiency of a Tesla coil versus a power grid.
These are some of the students who will represent Waimea Canyon Middle School at the District Science Fair, scheduled for Feb. 27 and 28 at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
The episode also covers the inaugural KIF Wrestling Tournament, held at Kaua‘i High School Jan. 12.
In his interview, Westside Wrestling Coach Matt Pigott described the event as a “manifestation of a vision quest.”
From there, Doi heads over to the 2013 Kaua‘i District Spelling Bee, held Jan. 23 at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School. CKMS eighth-graders Akira Takabayashi, first place, and Sydney Brady, second place, will represent Kaua‘i at the State Spelling Bee March 23 on O‘ahu.
Also featured in the episode are award-winning videos and animation by students Lia Yamasato (1st place winner of Olelo Youth Exchange Middle School Animation) and Kasey Emoto (Best Middle School Teen Video Award).
