LIHU‘E — Learning to swim is the first rule of water safety, said Mokihana Aquatics coach Orlando “O” Anaya.
Starting Monday, the first day of spring break, Mokihana Aquatics will host its Learn to Swim classes for infants, tiny tots and beginners.
“We still have room for the infants and beginners classes,” Anaya said. “But our tiny tots is sold out for the spring session.”
Classes for the infant and preschool aquatic program will meet on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Kaua‘i High School pool.
Beginner classes will also meet on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m. on the weekdays and from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Following the spring break classes, there are Learn to Swim programs for beginners and advanced beginners running April 1 through 6, and April 7 through 12; April 16 through 20, and April 22 through 25 as well as April 29 and 30.
The final spring session for beginners and advanced beginners will run May 2 and 3, May 6 through 10, and May 7 through 12.
Anaya said all swimmers must pre-register for any of the classes by calling 821-0587.
Anaya said the Mokihana Aquatics Learn to Swim program is one of the ways the club gives back to the community because every person who lives here should be able to swim.
During the program, a swimmer goes through five levels of progression starting with beginners, advanced beginners, intermediate swimmer and advanced swimmer.
Mokihana Aquatics also utilizes its Junior Leaders, who range from 12 to 16 years old and are able to offer a 6:1 learner-to-instructor ratio.
Anaya said because many of the Junior Leaders are swimmers with the Mokihana Aquatics program, the self confidence level of the Junior Leaders are also greatly enhanced due to the responsibility given to them through the teaching experience.
Leading up to the start of the Learn to Swim program, Mokihana Aquatics will also host its long distance time trials starting Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday at the Kaua‘i High School pool.
The public is invited to view the Mokihana Aquatics swimmers, who will race through the distance events over the three days, many of them advancing to become Junior Leaders during the Learn to Swim program.
