LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a High School girls and Waimea High School girls tied at 143 points followed by Kaua‘i High School at 94 points and Island School at 23 points.
On the boys’ arena, Kaua‘i boys controlled the second qualifying Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation track meet with 178 points followed by Kapa‘a High School with 152 points. Waimea High School finished with 92 points followed by Island School at seven points.
Outside of the overall team standings, more athletes broke into the state qualifying standards, led by Kaua‘i’s McKenna Lopez-Estacio who claimed an auto standard (based on 2012 standards) in the Boys Discus Throw on a toss of 151-01 for first place.
Lopez-Estacio also finished second in the Boys Shot Put on a placement of 43-09 for a state consideration, Kapa‘a’s Unaloto Masaniai getting gold in the event with a 43-10 placement, another state consideration.
Waimea also got its share of consideration standards, Henry Delos Reyes finishing first in the Boys Triple Jump on a 40-07 leap for a consideration standard.
Delos Reyes also finished second in the Boys Long Jump with a 19-08.75 leap for another consideration standard. Kaua‘i’s Christian Sarmiento set the pace in the event, finishing first on a 20-01 leap for consideration.
The Waimea Boys 4×100 Meter Relay team also pocketed a consideration standard for its first place finish with a 44.66 run.
Waimea’s Isaac Fierro topped the sprints, picking up state consideration standards with his first finish in the Boys 100 Meter Dash (11.38) and his first finish in the Boys 200 Meter Dash (23.40).
On the distance course, Kaua‘i’s Joshua Herr picked up a consideration standard with his first finish of 4:24.66, nearly 30 seconds ahead of second finisher Ronnie Perono of Kapa‘a. Herr also pocketed a consideration run with his first finish in the Boys 800 Meter Run, stopping the clock at 2:10.56.
Island School’s Joy Claypoole set the pace in the Girls 3000 Meter Run, finishing first on an 11:42.68 run for a state consideration time. Shan Fernandez-Sugimura finished in the runner-up spot nearly five minutes behind Claypoole.
Kaua‘i’s Chelsie Domingo, running in three of the sprint events, pocketed a state consideration time in the Girls 100 Meter Dash, stopping the clock at 13.19.
The KIF qualifying track meet continues Thursday starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. There is no admission for any of the qualifying meets. Admission will be charged for the KIF Championship Meet.
