LIHU‘E — County officials closed all north-facing beaches, including Anahola, due to high surf conditions.
Ocean Safety officials report hazardous ocean conditions with waves over 20 feet high.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores that will remain in effect until at least 6 a.m. Friday.
The warning calls for very strong shore breaks and dangerous rip currents, which make entering the water very hazardous.
The NWS warns that anyone entering the water in these areas is risking significant injury or death.
Lifeguards will remain at the beach towers throughout the day to notify beachgoers of the closure.
The beaches will reopen as officials deem them safe for swimming.
