LIHU‘E — McKenna Lopez-Estacio of Kaua‘i High School and Unaloto Masaniai of Kapa‘a High School were close to each other in the Boys field events, Thursday at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation Track and Field Qualifying Meet No. 3 at Vidinha Stadium.
The competitive edge resulted in the Kaua‘i boys tying Kapa‘a, each with team totals of 158.5 points followed by Waimea boys at 123 points and Island School at six points.
On the girls’ arena, Waimea’s Kawena Warren returned to pocket two consideration standards to lead Waimea girls to a 155-point team total followed by Kaua‘i at 124 points, Kapa‘a High School at 87 points and Island School finishing at 30 points.
Joy Claypoole set the pace for Island School, capturing a consideration standard (based on 2012 criteria) with a first finish in the Girls 3000 Meter Run with an 11:39.28 run.
Overall, the girls finished with one qualifying standard and five consideration standards while the boys pocketed two qualifying standards, including a KIF record-breaking performance, and nine consideration standards.
Kawehi Louis-Diamond of Kaua‘i set the pace, capturing a qualifying standard on a 16.43 first finish in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, and adding a consideration standard in the Girls Discus Throw with a toss of 110-04.
Hot on her tail, Waimea’s Warren finished second in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles with a consideration standard after stopping the clock at 16.74. Warren also added a consideration standard with her first finish in the Girls Long Jump on a 15-04 leap.
The girls rounded out its consideration standards when the Kaua‘i High School Girls 4×100 Meter Relay team topped the field on a 53.59 run.
After setting a KIF record-breaking toss during the opening KIF meet, Lopez-Estacio bettered that throw with a 157-10 toss, six feet better than the existing KIF record set in 2011.
Of note, KIF officials state that KIF records can only be broken during the championship meet. This means, if Lopez-Estacio can better a 151-10 throw in the Boys Discus during the KIF championship, the record belongs to him.
Lopez-Estacio also topped the Boys Shot Put event with a first finish at 42-11, just an inch further than Kapa‘a’s Masaniai who ended in second at 42-10, both placements qualifying for a consideration standard.
Masaniai also finished second in the Boys Discus Throw, earning a consideration standard with his 137.08 throw.
Holden Prem, finishing third in the Boys Discus, also earned a consideration standard with his 130-01 throw.
Kaua‘i distance runner Joshua Herr rounded out the qualifying standards with his first finish in the Boys 3,000 Meter Run where he stopped the clock at 9:18.21.
Waimea’s Henry Delos Reyes topped the Boys Triple Jump for a consideration standard with his leap of 39-09.75, bettering Kaua‘i’s Christian Sarmiento’s leap of 39-06.00 by more than three inches. Both first and second places earned consideration standards.
Moving to the track, the Waimea Boys 4×100 Meter Relay team earned a consideration standard with its first finish at 44.10 followed by the Kapa‘a Boys 4×100 Meter Relay team stopping the clock at 46.01, also a consideration standard.
Michael Alonzo, a Kapa‘a soccer standout, rounded out the consideration standards with his first finish in the Boys 200 Meter Dash where he stopped the clock at 23.41.
The KIF track qualifying meets next take the field on March 28, starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium.
