KALAHEO — The postal patrons arrived at the Kalaheo Post Office bearing flowers and potluck items Wednesday.
“We will be having a surprise aloha for Sandy on Wednesday afternoon,” said Ori Soto, a postal worker at the Kalaheo Post Office, in an email. “Sandy has been saying that she wants to slip out the back door without anyone noticing, but we feel she deserves some recognition.”
Thursday was Sandy Jardin Inouye’s final day of work at the Kalaheo Post Office, a position she’s filled for more than 33 years before retiring.
“I started back in November 1979,” the soft-spoken postal worker said. “I simply did what my family has been doing.”
Inouye said her dad was the first postmaster at the Kalaheo Post Office, working in a building located across Kaumuali‘i Highway where the current post office is located.
“He had a store and the post office was part of the store,” Inouye said. “I’m retiring now after more than 33 years, but my daughter-in-law, Tavey Inouye, is here. She’ll continue the family tradition.”
Donnell Ruiz is the postmistress for the Kalaheo Post Office, taking the place of Wayne Wakumoto who retired in August 2012.
The Kalaheo Post Office is located at 4489 Papalina Road and can be reached at 333-5800.
