WAIMEA — Nancy Golden may have retired Friday, but her heart and spirit at Nana’s House will live on in The Golden Fund.
Child & Family Services, a nonprofit founded in 1899, created the organization’s first named fund, The Nancy Golden Fund, in honor of Golden, who retired following nearly 20 years of service to CFS.
“May your Golden Heart forever beat here in Nana’s House through the creation of The Nancy Golden Fund,” said CFS President and CEO Howard Garval, who flew over from O‘ahu to make the formal presentation and agreement signing during the gathering at Nana’s House, at 9875 Waimea Road. “We are thrilled to honor your lifetime of caring for children and families in this wonderful way.”
Golden’s vision of helping others right in their neighborhood, a concept she learned while working at settlement houses on the Mainland, led her to start Nana’s House, a drop-in center in Waimea which helps those who may have lost jobs, are hungry and find themselves at risk of being victims of family abuse, states a CFS release.
The Golden Fund, already receiving a boost from Hanapepe Cafe’s Helen Lacono, who provided refreshments for Golden’s retirement as a contribution, noting payment can be placed in the fund, will be used to fund ongoing purchases at Nana’s House such as toys, food, diapers, and more which the family center offers to its clients.
“We thank you for saying ‘Yes’ to Patti Bates in 1993 when she asked you to join Child & Family Services,” Garval said. “We thank you for insisting on Hana Montgomery joining you to create the programs of Nana’s House, and for the nearly 20 years of aloha you poured into this important ‘home.’”
The Kaua‘i County Council, describing Golden as ‘the original Nana of Nana’s House in Waimea,’ added its accolades to the gathering.
“Through Nancy’s passionate advocacy for Kaua‘i’s keiki and families, she has helped residents survive difficult economic and financial periods, strengthened families of children who are neglected and abused, and provided supplies and necessities to those in need,” the council certificate states. “Nancy’s work will continue in perpetuity through the establishment of ‘The Golden Fund,’ which will provide hope and support for Kaua‘i’s families into the future.”
Nana’s House in Waimea, a “one-stop” family service center is a model for Child & Family Service prevention services, providing a safe environment for families and an opportunity for risk assessment by CFS professional staff. CFS, in addition to Nana’s House in Waimea, also operates Hale Ho‘omalu in Kapa‘a as well as Neighborhood Place in Wailuku, Maui.
CFS is Hawai‘i’s most comprehensive human services private nonprofit agency with more than 30 culturally relevant programs which address serious life issues acing Hawai‘i’s families ranging from domestic violence and family neglect to elderly abuse.
