LIHU‘E — The Department of Land and Natural Resources closed the Kalalau Trail due to a flash flood watch.
The National Weather Service has placed the islands of Kaua‘i, Ni‘ihau and O‘ahu under a flash flood watch through tonight.
Based on the forecast, the DLNR took precautionary action for public safety in anticipation of the wet weather.
Hikers are advised to not take the trail since they may find themselves on the far side of streams that may be subject to flash flooding, thus potentially putting themselves and county rescue personnel at risk.
DLNR advises hikers to not cross a flooded stream and to keep to high ground and wait for the stream to subside.
Officials said they would evaluate the weather conditions today to decide whether to remove the trail closure sign.
