LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank recently accepted a $46,000 grant from DuPont Pioneer.
The grant will fund Keiki Cafe West, an after-school snack program that provides healthy snacks to more than 650 children each week.
Children who enjoy the Keiki Cafe West come from the Waimea High School, Waimea Canyon School, the Kekaha Neighborhood Center and St. Teresa’s Community Program through a collaborative agreement between the Boys and Girls Club, Waimea Clubhouse and KIFB.
“Food security is one of the areas of focus for DuPont Pioneer’s giving program,” said Laurie Yoshida, DuPont Pioneer spokeswoman. “We are pleased to be able to provide this grant to the KIFB to ensure the success of these programs focused on our Westside keiki.”
Primarily, the grant will fund the program feeding the Keiki Cafe West for the next two years.
The remainder of the grant will help fund the Ni‘ihau Backpack program, administered by KIFB, which provides weekly backpacks of nutritious and healthy food to at least a hundred children attending two Hawaiian Charter Schools in Kekaha.
