LIHU‘E — Kapa‘a’s Kenji Miyata shot the best round of the day at one-over par 73, but the Kaua‘i High School boys won the match by two strokes, 327 (84-75-86-82) to 329 (86-73-83-87), Saturday during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf, Match No. 5 at the Puakea Golf Course.
On the girls’ side, Kaua‘i High School was the sole team scoring at 249 (81-81-87) led by its veteran golfers, Taylor Viquelia (40-41) who returned following a two-week layoff, and Daezsa Tomas (44-37), both girls finishing at 81.
Freshman Hi‘ilani Alana rounded out the Red Raider girls’ scoring with an 87 (43-44) in the day which started out with nice, but windy conditions and deteriorating with bouts of showers as the first group teed off.
Other Kaua‘i individualists included Jenae Park (54-47-101) and Randi Oxentine (62-58-120).
Waimea High School girls were led by veteran golfer Mariah Paiste (42-51-93) and Kawena Warren (48-56-104).
Na‘ea Oda was the sole Kapa‘a female, finishing at 80 (39-41) and Kari Whitworth was the sole Island School girl, carding a 94 (44-50).
Jamie Amimoto, finishing the back nine at one-over par, led the Kaua‘i boys who enjoyed the return of both Pono Tokioka (43-41-84) and Braeden Robley (44-38-82), as Amimoto, escorted by both his parents through the Puakea course, carded a 75 (38-37), just two strokes off the pace set by Miyata.
Trevor Kua rounded out the Kaua‘i boys’ scoring with an 86 (42-44).
Other Red Raider individualists included Kai Adachi (42-48-90), Vance Tokita (45-45-90), Keith Jose (44-52-96), Ian Castro (66-54-120), Jeremy Felizardo (59-52-111) and Jacob Viquelia (46-44-90).
Miyata, a senior at Kapa‘a High School, struggled with his game from the start of the KIF golf season, finally getting a handle with a two-under par 34 back nine showing, and taking the No. 1 spot for Kapa‘a.
His lead was added to by Bryden Salvador (44-39-83), Kainalu Gandia (48-38-86) and Kawika Wellington (43-44-87) who finished the round tied with teammate Landen Ishida (42-45-87).
Other Warrior individualists included Anthony Aiwohi (51-49-100) and Justin Donios (65-57-122).
Waimea fielded two boys, not enough for team scoring, with Tresten Nakashima leading the Menehune at 95 (49-46) followed by Wesley Carter-Fujinaka (57054-111).
Island School, coming off its spring break, also fielded two golfers, insufficient for team scoring) as Jacob Dysinger headed to the scorer’s table with an 88 (45-43) followed by Adam Sclafani (48-46-94).
Saturday marks the final golf round ahead of the two-round qualifying for the David Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state golf championships which will be held on Maui on April 30 and May 1.
Tee times Saturday start at noon at Wailua Golf Course. The two-round qualifying matches will also be held at Wailua on April 19 and April 20.
