KAPA‘A — Small steps, many of them, added up to one big donation for the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Some 200 walkers raised $36,780.50 during the MS Walk at the Kapa‘a Beach Park on Saturday.
“All of these walkers and volunteers helped to create more awareness than all the years in the past,” said Dominique Bartolo, administrator for the MS office in Honolulu.
Dubbed the “Sunset Stroll,” walkers engaged in a series of pre-walk activities including a Zumba session before being sent on thyeir way by Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. and Ron Wiley, the on-air personality for the KQNG Radio Group.
Laurie Weber, with support of the Tire Warehouse group in its custom orange shirts, was the top group fundraiser with nearly $14,000 raised, Bartolo said.
She was followed by the Cynthia Edralin support group, which turned in more than $5,000, plus a handmade blanket created by Edralin.
Supporters of Krystal Hiranaka, sporting custom shirts provided by M. Kawamura Farm Enterprises, turned in nearly $4,000 to lead the major fundraising efforts.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease which attacks the central nervous system. Symptoms range from mild, including numbness in the limbs, to severe such as paralysis, or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.
