LIHU‘E — The man held in connection with the death of a Kapa‘a woman is now charged with second-degree murder.
Steven Michael Wilson, 26, of Kapa‘a, remains in police custody in lieu of $1 million bail. He will appear in Kaua‘i District Court this afternoon for arraignment on the charge, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Kendra “Kenny” Elizabeth Lewis, 21, of Kapa‘a, was found dead on Friday afternoon in her room at the Kawaihau Sports Villa condominium. An autopsy was conducted Monday and confirmed that she died as a result of stab wounds.
Lewis was an Anchorage, Alaska, native and worked as a cook at Olympic Café in Kapa‘a. Lewis has family on Kaua‘i.
Police said Wilson and Lewis relocated to Kaua‘i from Alaska at the beginning of the year and were living together at the time of her death.
The association made Wilson a person of interest in the case and police brought him in for questioning around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. He was later arrested and charged with her death.
A preliminary hearing will be scheduled following the arraignment to allow a district court judge to determine if sufficient evidence exists to prosecute the case.
If so, the case would be set for trial in 5th Circuit Court, or bound over for the next grand jury to decide on a felony indictment.
If convicted, Wilson faces a possible sentence of life with the possibility of parole as determined by the Hawai‘i Parole Authority.
Under Hawai‘i Revised Statutes, a person commits the offense of murder in the second degree when intentionally or knowingly causing the death of another person. It is a class B felony offense.
