WAILUA — Four graduating high school students were honored by the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i during the organization’s meeting at Brick Oven Pizza in Wailua on Tuesday.
The high school seniors, two from Kapa‘a High School and two from Kaua‘i High School, were recipients of scholarships presented by the Kiwanis Club.
Genelynne Morden of Kaua‘i High received a $1,000 scholarship, which will help when she enters Pacific University this fall.
Morden, the secretary for the Kaua‘i High School Key Club, has a 3.9 GPA and is looking at nursing as a field of study.
Angelina Llego, Key Club president at Kapa‘a High School and has a 3.8 GPA, received a $500 scholarship. She plans to pursue a nursing degree at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.
Maricar Bersamira of Kaua‘i High and J.R. Quilos of Kapa‘a High each received $250 scholarships.
Bersamira, Kaua‘i High Key Club president, holds a 3.7 GPA and plans to enter Chaminade University this fall and study nursing.
Quilos, the past president of the Kapa‘a High Key Club and current secretary, has a 3.3 GPA and will enter the Kaua‘i Community College to study medicine.
The Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i has provided $64,500 in scholarships for graduating Key Club members since the program started in 1989.
Scholarship recipients are awarded based on leadership, community service, academic achievements, need, adviser comments, and an essay.
Funds for scholarships are derived through fundraising by the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i, including the recent French toast breakfast, where more than 1,500 breakfasts were served at the Elsie Wilcox Elementary School cafeteria.
The Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i meets every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Hanama‘ulu Cafe. Arryl Kaneshiro is Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i president.
