LIHU‘E — Fast Company made the most of light winds to pick up the win in the second race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Jaunice Biederman Memorial Run Series Thursday.
“The starting officers gave the boats a long and two short laps, but took the last lap off when it took so long for them to get back from the Ninini Point Lighthouse on the first leg,” said Sharon Gibson, the NYC scorekeeper. “The wind was really light (5 to 10 knots). Coyote and Mapuana were bringing up the rear of the 10-boat fleet and did not finish due to the darkness.”
Fast Company, one of four Olson 30s in the NYC fleet, filled in the top spot, challenged by two other Olson 30s.
Fast Company crossed the finish lin on a 1:07:38 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:07:44 PHRF followed by OZone crossing on a 1:09:10 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:09:16 PHRF.
Weatherly, the third Olson 30, slipped across the line on a 1:15:17 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:15:24 PHRF.
Chaos, a Hobie 33, filled in the No. 4 spot on a 1:18:45 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:19.14 PHRF. The Hobie further corrected to 1:11:18 Club for top honors in that class.
Papa‘au, normally a strong contender for the top spots, was relegated to the No. 5 berth, crossing on a 1:29:33 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:25:44 PHRF. Her closest to the top spot came in the Club class where she corrected to 1:21:59 Club.
Speedy, the fourth Olson 30 in the fleet, followed on a 1:34:19 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:34:28 PHRF followed by Bonjolea II, the newest boat in the fleet piloted by Bonnie Tiffany, crossing on a 1:28:47 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:34:36 PHRF.
Coyote, Mapuana and Trinity marked DNF’s.
The Offshore Race scheduled for Saturday was called off due to the threat of weather, but the public is invited to view the action, Thursday when the NYC Juanice Biederman series continues with Race No. 3.
