HANAMA‘ULU — About 2,500 gallons of sewage overflowed Tuesday morning from a manhole in Hanama‘ulu.
This is the second sewage spill reported in the area in less than a week. In both instances, the spill was due to a blocked sewer line.
On April 3, less than 5,000 gallons of sewage flowed from a manhole along the side of the Kuhio Highway, where it went over a steep slope and stopped in an area where there is no pedestrian access.
County officials report that Tuesday’s spill did not reach the Hanama‘ulu Stream. Cleanup efforts were completed by 12:30 p.m., with all affected areas disinfected with granulated chlorine.
The right southbound lane on the Kuhio Highway between Hanama‘ulu and Ma‘alo Road was closed from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to allow members of the Wastewater Division, Roads Division, the Kaua‘i Police Department and the Department of Transportation to coordinate cleanup efforts. A report on the spill was submitted to the state Department of Health, and DOH officials concurred with actions taken by the county, according to county spokeswoman Mary Daubert.
