LIHU‘E — Bonjolea II, a new sailing boat in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club fleet, crossed the line first, overall, but after corrections, finished fifth Thursday during the inaugural Juanice Biederman Memorial Run Series Race.
“Bonjolea II is Doug and Bonnie Tiffany’s new boat, a Sydney 36, he recently brought over from O‘ahu,” NYC scorekeeper Sharon Gibson said. “This was her first buoy race. She finished first, but her rating requires her to give time to most of the boats and Papa‘au corrected ahead of everyone who finished before her.”
Papa‘au, a spirited Express 27, crossed the line of the 4.71-mile course on a 1:05:47 elapsed sail, correcting to 1:02:58 PHRF for top honors in the three-leg race at Nawiliwili Harbor.
“We had a good start to the JBM Series,” Gibson said. “The wind wasn’t too strong, 5 to 10 knots out of the North Northeast, but it was steady and enough to keep the boats moving. We had nine boats participate and five of them were very close together at the finish. This one was quite fun for the spectators and the racers.”
OZone settled the battle of the Olson 30s with a 1:05:02 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:05:08 PHRF, less than 30 seconds ahead of Fast Company, another of the Olson 30s, who crossed on a 1:05:29 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:05:38 PHRF.
The pair was challenged by Weatherly, another of four Olson 30s in the NYC racing fleet, who crossed on a 1:06:09 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:06:15 PHRF for fourth place honors, ahead of Bonjolea II who zipped across the line with a 1:04:16 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:08:29 PHRF for fifth place. Weatherly also corrected to 1:01:57 Club for top honors in that division.
Speedy (1:11:02 elapsed, 1:11:09 PHRF), Chaos, a re-named Hobie 33 (1:12:06 elapsed, 1:12:33 PHRF), Mapuana (1:18:49 elapsed, 1:15:01 PHRF) and Trinity (1:17:18 elapsed, 1:28:00 PHRF) rounded out the fleet.
The JBM series continues Thursday with the public being invited to view the competition from the Nawiliwili Harbor jetty wall when the first flags fly at 5 p.m.
