LIHU‘E — The Hawai‘i State Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting efforts to help victims of the devastating tornadoes that struck Shawnee and other parts of Oklahoma City.
With the death toll climbing and countless people left homeless, the Red Cross is sending shelters, food, water, supplies and equipment into the area. Specialized Red Cross disaster teams are arriving with more coming over the next few weeks to help residents recover from the storms.
“Here in Hawai‘i, our thoughts and sympathy are with all those impacted by these tornadoes,” said Coralie Matayoshi, CEO of the American Red Cross. “Our local volunteers are on alert and stand ready to be deployed if requested.”
The Red Cross deployed almost 30 emergency response vehicles to distribute food and relief supplies and more are on alert.
“Right now, no Hawai‘i volunteers are being deployed to help in Oklahoma,” said Cindy Tanaka, communications director for Hawai‘i Red Cross.
