PO’IPU – Anyone interested in sharing their ideas on how to transform the south shore into a walkable, welcoming and healthy community is encouraged to attend the Po’ipu Road Design Workshop scheduled Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Sponsored by the county and Get Fit Kaua’i, the aim of the workshop is to develop Po’ipu Road so that it’s safe and meets the needs of all users.
Two nationally known experts on creating walkable communities Dan Burden and Michael Moule who have helped numerous communities across the U.S. will serve as facilitators.
“I encourage everyone to take part in this important discussion,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “Help us create a vision for the South Shore that’s based on input from all stakeholders.”
The workshop will consist of two walking audits and three meetings:
• Friday, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Po’ipu Shopping Village – Walk along portions of Po’ipu Road between the roundabout and the Grand Hyatt Kaua’i Resort and Spa and analyze features, issues and concerns.
• Friday, May 10, 6 to 8 p.m., The Shops at Kukui‘ula – Meeting to discuss the future of Po’ipu Road.
• Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Koloa Elementary School – Walk along portions of Po’ipu Road between the roundabout and Koloa Road and examine features, issues and concerns.
• Saturday, May 11, 2 to 4 p.m., The Shops at Kukui‘ula – Meeting to create design concepts for Po’ipu¯ Road based on community input.
• Monday, May 13, 5 to 7 p.m., The Shops at Kukui‘ula – Meeting to review refined design solutions for Po’ipu Road.
Some of the topics that will be covered include: how can residents and visitors shop, dine, go to the beach, and enjoy all that the South Shore has to offer; how can the area be made safer for children to walk to school in Koloa; what are the options for people that work in the area for getting to and from work; and how can problems such as speeding and parking be addressed.
