PO‘IPU — The Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce celebrated its centennial with a golf tournament Sunday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
“Because it’s the 100th anniversary of the chamber, we thought we would set a goal of 100 golfers,” said Randall Francisco, chamber president. “I believe we hit our mark of 100 golfers so we’re also going to try and present more scholarships as part of the celebration.”
The 10th annual Scholarship Golf Tournament generated funds for scholarships presented to Kaua‘i’s students.
Under the Premier sponsorship of Pacific Service & Development/NAPA Auto Parts and Tire Warehouse Kaua‘i, golfers gathered for a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at the former home of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Sandi Kato-Klutke said she got up before 4 a.m. to make hot dogs and Spam musubi for the golfers. The post-play luncheon wasn’t scheduled to start until around 1 p.m.
Francisco said the chamber would not have made the centennial celebration without the help of everyone — from Kato-Klutke’s pre-dawn food to volunteers who checked in golfers to chamber members who support programs that make the island a better place.
Prizes were awarded to the 10th place finish, the 100th place finish and the first place Corporate Challenge.
An additional “hit it on the green” competition at the 11th hole added to the excitement as golfers making the green became eligible for a special door prize.
