LAHAINA — Kaua‘i’s Daezsa Tomas fired a 78 Wednesday to top the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girl golfers on Maui.
Tomas, charging back from an opening round 83 (44-39), a stroke back of Na‘ea Oda of Kapa‘a High School. She charged to finish seven-over par to finish in 16th place with a two-day 161 (83-78).
Tomas led the the KIF champion Kaua‘i girls team to an eighth place in the team competition at the
David Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state golf tournament played at the Royal Ka‘anapali Course on Maui.
The Red Raider girls opened with a 258 (83-84-91-106) and improved four strokes to a final-round 254 (78-80-96-100) for a two-day team total 512.
Overall team champions for the girls state tournament went to Punahou with a 435 (222-213).
Following Tomas, Kaua‘i left-hander Taylor Viquelia finished in a three-way tie for 20th place with a two-day 164 (84-80), the other two golfers being Iris Kawada of Castle (84-80-164) and Kimberlie Miyamoto of Baldwin (89-75-164).
Oda finished in a four-way tie for 25th place with a two-day 166 (82-84).
Kaua‘i freshman Hi‘ilani Alana finished tied for 49th place with a two-day 187 (91-96).
Kari Whitworth, who became the first girl golfer for Island School this year, finished in 54th place with a two-day 202 (98-104). Kaua‘i’s Jenae Park rounded out the KIF field in 57th place with a two-day 206 (106-100).
Mariel Galdiano, firing a five-under par 137 (68-69), topped the girls individualists for Punahou.
The boys will tee off at the David Ishii Foundation HHSAA state golf tournament on May 7 and 8 at the Royal Ka‘anapali Course.
