WAILUA — The Kauai Interscholastic Federation golf season wrapped up with the two-day state qualifying meet that concluded Saturday at the Wailua Golf Course.
The team championships were determined during last week’s round played at the Puakea Golf Course, and the determination of the individual golfers for both the boys and girls flights was at stake during the 36-hole tournament.
Kapaa High School captured both the boys and girls title earlier in the season. For individualist play, Island School’s Lucas Summerhays topped the Boys Individualist play by a stroke over Kapaa golfer Logan Laymon who also beat out Voyager Garrett Hadley and Warrior golfer Graham Morgan by a stroke. Hadley and Morgan finished in a tie for third place at 157 each.
Summerhays ended the two days with a 155 total, followed by Laymon at 156, and Hadley and Graham at 157 each.
“It was a battle on the back nine for the final group of boys on the final day of the KIF Championship at Wailua on Saturday,” said Paul Ito, the KIF golf scorekeeper. “The final group of Lucas Summerhays of Island School, Logan Laymon of Kapaa, and Garett Hadley of Island School all fought hard and went back and forth with numerous lead changes, birdies, bogeys and a lot of exciting golf over the final nine holes.”
“In the end, it was Island School senior Summerhays squeaking out a 1-shot victory over Kapaa sophomore Laymon to secure his third consecutive Boys KIF Championship,” Ito said. “For those that remember, Lucas finished in second place his freshman year. A big congratulations to Lucas and a great run of high school golf.”
Renyn Lee and Caleb Taba, both swinging Red Raider clubs, finished in fifth and sixth places, respectively, in Boys Individualist play.
“On the girls’ course, three was also the magic number for Kauai High School senior Amalia Abigania as she locked up her third consecutive Girls KIF Championship,” Ito said. “Amalia played solid in both rounds and beat out Kauai High School teammate Sydney Ito by 11 shots.”
Amalia finished the two days with a 177 total, followed by Sydney carding a 188. Third-place finisher Juliette O’Shaughnessy of Kapaa ended with a 192, a stroke better than team mate Mehana Guy who carded a 193. Brynn Lee Hirata of Waimea and Shayla Edgerton of Island School finished in fifth and sixth places, respectively.
The Kapaa Boys and Girls teams as well as the top individualists will advance to represent the KIF at the 2025 David Ishii Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Golf Championships that will play at Mauna Lani on the Big Island.
The girls will play April 29 and 30. The boys will tee off on May 1 and 2.
