LIHUE — The Kauai Police Activities League, with the help of volunteers from the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, ran the Mayor’s Youth Track and Field events for middle school students at the Island School on the Good Friday holiday.
The special track on grass was created to accommodate both the KPAL event and the Rotary Track Meet for high school students.
During the meet for middle school students, participating schools included the Alakai O Kauai Public Charter School, Island School, Waimea Canyon Middle School, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, Kapaa Middle School and Kawaikini Charter School, as well as the Kauai Westside Track Club.
Boy and girl athletes competed in events blanketed by a light misty rain, including the 60 meter dash (for 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels), the 400 meter run, the 1,600 meter SMR relay, the 4×60 shuttle hurdles, and field events including shot put and long jump.

According to the online results, Waimea Canyon boys took first place in the 6th grade and 7th grade level competition, and finished in third place for the boys 8th grade level.
Waimea Canyon girls finished first in the 6th grade level competition, but slipped to second place in the 7th grade and third place in the 8th grade level competition. Kapaa Middle, who did not field any competitors in the 6th grade, finished first in the 7th and 8th grade levels.
KPAL extended its appreciation to all student athletes, coaches, families and community members who supported the event. KPAL extended special thanks to Island School, Iwi Kua and the Office of the Mayor for their partnership in making this event possible.
