Now that the Easter Bunny has come and gone, it’s time for koinobori, or the carp banners that fly during Children’s Day (it used to be known as Boys Day, just as Girls Day was on March 3, or the third day of the third month). The koi symbolize wishes for children to grow up strong, healthy and capable, just as the koi swims against the currents to get upriver.

The Kapaia Foundation will host its koinobori from April 28 until May 28 in remembrance of old Kapaia town that supported nearly 600 families. Sponsors, either individuals, families or businesses, are invited to get sponsor koinobori to join the field of 600 koi that decorate the valley surrounding the historic swinging bridge. Sizes from 12 inches to 60 inches are available.
Hint: The vision of colorful koi flying in the valley, and the available landscape enhancements, make a nice setting for Christmas cards … you provide the camera.
The day before the koi take to the air in Kapaia Valley, the Child and Family Service, its family centers Nana’s House and Hale Hoomalu present the Ohana Fun Festival on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The free event at the Puhi park open field (yes, it’s the same place where the Grove Farm Market takes place on Saturdays) will feature a day of rides, food, crafts and activities for the entire family.
Happy Earth Day (it was celebrated on April 22) to everyone … The Friends of Lydgate Park and Kamalani Playground hosts its annual Earth Day cleanup this Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until lunch or 1 p.m.
