LIHUE — Kapaa Elementary School teacher Milagros Sagucio was a big winner during the last Kauai Association for Family and Community Education meeting during which winners of this year’s Character Counts were announced.
Sagucio’s student Kawehimakanoe Mardonada was a dual winner after having earned first place for Kauai. Her award-winner piece was forwarded for state consideration and earned first place in the state competition. Her award-winning project has been forwarded for national consideration. The decision won’t be announced until at least February.
The second-place winner, Dustin Navor-Silva, the third-place winner, Ruth Kuhaulua, and Honorable Mention winner Elijah Ganotisi, are all Kapaa Elementary students who have Sagucio as their teacher.
In addition to the Character Counts awards, the KAFCE group also accepted a contribution for the organization’s Books for Newborns program from Sheila Bradley of Sheila Bradley Books and More.
Bradley said traditionally, the books would be turned over to Wilcox Health where the books would be distributed at clinics during the child wellness checks.
For this distribution, the KAFCE wanted to share the books with the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, Kauai Region clinics, and selected Carolyn Lum to coordinate the distribution.
