KAPAA — Kapaa High School boys volleyball, which suffered its first season loss, 1:3 against Waimea last Friday, rebounded to take victory in four sets against Kauai High School on Tuesday during the Kauai Interscholastic Federation boys volleyball games played at the Bernice Hundley Gym.
Several hundred people watched the earlier Junior Varsity series work through three sets. Kapaa JV took the first two sets, 25-22, 25-22 before the Red Raider JV was able to shut the door 15-10 in the final set.
On the varsity court, the Warriors felt the sting of its first season loss to come back with a convincing 25-19 win. Kauai regrouped from its first set loss to come back from the opening serve and claim a 25-20 win.
Tied 1-1, Kapaa came back strong in the next two sets to overcome the Red Raider challenge with wins of 25-18 and 25-23.
A Kauai service error gave the ball to Kapaa in the first set for a 6-3 Warrior bulge. The Raiders suffered a net violation before a Kapaa service error gave them the ball, chasing three points, 4-7.
Red Raider Camren Holt-Ho served Kauai to a point deficit, 6-7, spiced by Caleb Schmaeling coming strong up the middle before another service error turned the ball over to Kapaa.
Kauai’s Pierson Fox pounded out an ace to keep the gap to within a point, 9-10 before the Raiders lost the ball on a hitting error. Kapaa’s Filisi Hunt pretty much put the game out of reach from the service block when Hunt served the Warriors to a 17-9 margin. The string included a whack from Emry Picturachsatit and a Kapaa block.
Kauai battled back, but was only able to score seven points before Warrior Tyler Thornton shut the door, 25-19.
Kauai led by as much as 11 points in the second set before Kapaa started chipping away at the deficit. Picturachsatit included an ace and a hammer in serving up a string that brought Kapaa to within six points before Kauai sealed the deal on another middle attack by Barkley Gillman.
Over at the Clem Gomes Gym where Waimea hosted Island School in a single match, the Voyagers prevailed, 3:1 in four sets.
The next KIF boys volleyball games take place on Friday when the Menehune hosts Kauai High School at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea. The JV games start at 5 p.m. and the varsity games serve up 20 minutes following the end of the JV matches.
Kapaa High School will travel to the Wilcox Gymnasium to face Island School in a single varsity match starting at 6:30 p.m.
