LIHUE — Tight play on Saturday at the Puakea Golf Course resulted in some exciting golf action during the final Kauai Interscholastic Federation round.
The Kauai High School girls team earned their first match win of the season by putting up a team score of 293 to beat out the Kapaa High School girls team total of 304, a margin of 11 strokes, said Paul Ito, who has been doing KIF scorekeeping and tracking duties.
“A big mahalo to Puakea Golf Course for having the kids out for their match on Saturday,” Ito said. “The ongoing bunker renovations at Puakea did not stop the kids from playing some great golf in the final KIF match of the 2025 season.”
“On the boys’ course, Kapaa boys team played solid across the board and held on to win with a team score of 318, edging out the hard-charging Island School team by just three strokes,” Ito said.
For individual play, Kauai High School came out of the shadows when sophomore Caleb Taba topped the leaderboard with his best round of the season, even par 72.
Island School came forward, again as individualist Lucas Summerhays filled in the No. 2 spot just a stroke behind Taba at 73, and Chris Jobe of Island School also broke into the Top 3 in third place at two-over 74, a stroke back of Summerhays, and two strokes chasing Taba.
“Kauai High School’s Amalia Abigania fired a season low 81 to lead the way for the girls,” Ito said. “She was followed by teammate Sydney Ito who shot 88. Mehana Guy from Kapaa secured the No. 3 individualist spot with a score of 91.”
Ito said the Kapaa Boys and Girls teams won the Central Pacific Bank KIF Team Championships, and will be representing the KIF at the 2025 David Ishii Foundation Hawaii High School Athletic Golf State Championships at the Mauna Lani Resort, North Course on the Big Island. The girls will play April 29 and 30 before the boys tee off on May 1 and 2.
Friday and Saturday, the KIF Championships will tee off at the Wailua Golf Course.
Ito said this tournament will determine the individual boys and girls CPB KIF Champions, and the individual qualifiers for the state championship tournament. The first groups tee off from noon on each day.
